EXAMENS OF CONSCIENCEParticular Examen - Method1. Presence of God: God, my Creator, my sovereign Lord beholds me. What a look of holiness, of greatness,of tenderness and of compassion! Jesus beholds me. He is here present.2. Preparatory Prayer: My God, may I apply myself to this exercise with my whole heart. Grant me Thygrace!Point 1. To return thanks to God for His benefits, above all for His love in imparting them. Let us enter intodetails: creation; redemption; preservation; sacraments; vocation; mental prayer, Mass and Communion, in-spirations; occasions of practicing virtue. It might be helpful to write a list of the special graces of one's life.Let us give thanks for the love which has foreseen, given with fatherly hand. I don't want to be ungratefulPoint 2. To ask for light to know one's faults and be sorry for them. I am ignorant, blind, proud. Permit menot to be deluded about my faults. Give me light, and true compunction. I beseech Thee that I may abhor theleast faults, because they displease Thee; make me understand all their baseness, their ingratitude.Point 3. Examen: see below a list of questions which may serve as a guide. Have I been faithful in strikingmy breast, after each failure, or as soon as it was remembered? This can be done discreetly when not alone.Point 4. Contrition: Points 4 & 5 are the most important. 1/2 of the entire time for the Examen ought to bedevoted to them. "God, I humbly beg pardon for having been so cowardly. Thou gavest me this morningsolely to serve Thee, to glorify Thee, to do Thy will; to attach myself more to X, my Saviour; to help soulsby my works, prayers and sufferings; to strive after detachment and humility! How cowardly have I beentoday! I have done my will and not Thine! Behold such and such a fault... and so many faults during mywhole life! What ingratitude has repaid Thy benefits! Give me a lively sorrow for it! I beg this of Theethrough Thy Sacred Heart which has loved me, who am so guilty!Point 5. Firm purpose...
