A church should be built in such a way that normally its apse is oriented toward the east.In it, three sections are distinguished: the ‘haikla’ or nave, where the faithful stand; the‘qestroma’, which is elevated a little above the nave, near the sanctuary, is reserved for thesingers; and the sanctuary itself to which, through a gate with a grating with three steps, onegoes up from the ‘qestroma’, and is separated from it by a veil. A church normally also has a‘beth sahde’ (house of the witnesses) or place where the bodies and relics of holy martyrsare kept, which is near the sanctuary situated on its eastern wall. There is also a baptistrysituated outside of the sanctuary and the ‘qestroma’. In the middle of the sanctuary a largelamp hangs or stands.2. The altar is normally set up in such a way that it adheres to the eastern wall of the church.Its top is covered with a cloth and, following a liturgical ceremony, a suitable covering isplaced over it.The tabernacle on the altar should not be so high or wide that it impedes liturgical actions ormakes them difficult. It must be fixed [on the altar].The candelabra should not obstruct the altar. The book of divine service should be placed ona cushion, not on a stand, and during the entire time of mass should stay on the southernedge of the altar; but the book of Gospels should be on the northern edge. Reliquaries,natural or artificial flowers or other things which are not required for the divine sacrificeshould not be placed on the altar.3. On the northern side of the sanctuary, there is firstly a beth gazza (treasury), or in its placea table on which are the paten and the bread to be consecrated are put, while on the southernside another cabinet, or in its place a table on which the chalice is readied and cruets of wineand water are placed.
