This Dictionary comprises more than 18.000 words. It is the result offour years of intensive research (1995-1999), preceded by compilations, arranged by theme, of lists of wordsprepared since 1989.I made a selection from the words given in the following list of dictionaries, trying to follow, as closely aspossible, the most common usage in both, formal as well as colloquial language. Tamil teachers from differentareas assisted me in the correction of mistakes and helped me to clear my doubts on the genuine and currentmeaning of some of the words.A final checking was undertaken by my guide for this work, Dr. T. Natarajan, Head and Co-ordinator of theSchool of Tamil Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai , who has given me an indispensable and veryprecious assistance for this project.
