1CHAPTER 3. THE HISTORY1. The Biblical Background of the Anaphoraof Mar NestoriusIntroductionBible is the Main Component of Liturgy. The Church continued the Jewish tradition of meditating onGod's Word in the meetings and reciting the psalms. Other texts are imbued with scriptural reminiscences. Sothe consecutive reading has an important place in liturgy. Bible reading and psalm praying are the main partsof the liturgy of prayer. The whole bible is a liturgical book. Only for practical reasons, each Church hasmade a selection of texts. Originally (in Judaism and early Christianity) the liturgy of the word was separatedfrom the sacramental liturgy. After the separation with the synagogue, both parts were joined together. Theauthentic place for bible-reading is the liturgical celebration. The reformation limited the bible to anindividual reading, but the bible is born in the living tradition of the Christian community and is written onits behalf. It is in the church, under the guidance of the bishop, that it gets its right interpretation. Over manycenturies, it was the practice of the church to read the Scripture publicly, always accompanied by explanationfrom the bishop or his delegate for this purpose.God is present in His Word, His Word is inseparable from His Person, therefore in the liturgy it hassacramental power, it causes faith in the hearers, and by doing thus, it ensures a fruitful reception of thesacraments. Therefore every sacramental rite is preceded by a liturgy of the Word. The reading requests anexplanation to apply it to the concrete needs. This was already the tradition in the synagogue. In its essencethe homily is a biblical explanation and belongs to the liturgical celebration.The psalms form the main part of the prayer liturgy, in divine office as well as in the eucharist.
